Subtitle generator FAQ

Quick answers about the free subtitle generator: how it works, what it supports and how your data is handled.

What is the best free subtitle generator?

The best subtitle generator is the one that fits your needs. If you want a free subtitle generator that is private, adds no watermark and lets you edit before you export, this tool is built for exactly that. See our checklist for choosing the best free subtitle generator.

Is this a free AI subtitle generator or an auto subtitle generator?

Both. It is an AI subtitle generator because it uses Whisper speech recognition, and an auto subtitle generator because it creates the subtitles for you to review. You can use the AI subtitle generator free of charge, with no account. Read how it works.

Is there a free subtitle generator with no watermark and no sign-up?

Yes. This free subtitle generator with no watermark adds nothing to your SRT, VTT or TXT files, needs no login and never asks for a sign-up. See what to look for.

How do I generate subtitles from audio for free?

Open the tool, drop in an MP3, WAV, M4A or other audio file, choose the language and press Generate subtitles. You can generate subtitles from audio online in minutes, edit the text, then download SRT, VTT or TXT. The same steps work for any recording, from podcasts to voice notes.

Can I add subtitles to a video online for free?

Yes. Drop in your MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV file, generate the subtitles, fix any words and download the SRT or VTT. You can add subtitles to a video free online with no sign-up, then upload the file to your video platform or editor.

Can YouTube auto generate subtitles, and how do I use a YouTube subtitle generator?

YouTube can create automatic captions, but they are often inaccurate. With a YouTube subtitle generator you create better subtitles first: generate them here, download the SRT and upload it in YouTube Studio. It works for long videos and for Shorts. Our YouTube subtitle generator guide walks through it step by step.

Does it work as a video subtitle generator for MP4 files?

Yes. It is a video subtitle generator for MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV, and it also accepts audio files. Use it as a free video subtitle generator, or a subtitle generator for video of any length your device can handle. See the auto subtitle generator for video guide.

Is it an online subtitle generator? Do I need to install anything?

It is an online subtitle generator, so there is nothing to install and no login. Open the page in a modern browser, add your file and download the result. A free online subtitle generator should be that simple.

What is the difference between an automatic subtitle generator and manual subtitling?

Manual subtitling means typing every line and setting every time by hand, which can take hours. An automatic subtitle generator drafts the lines and timings for you, and you only review them. A free automatic subtitle generator like this one turns hours of work into minutes.

How do I make subtitles for free?

Open the free subtitle generator, drop in your video or audio, choose the language and press Generate subtitles. Edit any words in the editor, then download SRT, VTT or TXT. It is a free subtitle generator online, with no account and no watermark. More help in our guides.

Is the subtitle generator really free?

Yes. It is free to use, with no trial period, no credits, no account and no watermark. You can use the subtitles for personal, educational or commercial videos.

Are my videos uploaded anywhere?

No. Your file is processed by your own browser on your own device. Only the AI model is downloaded, once, and your media is never sent to our servers or to anyone else.

Which languages are supported?

The speech-recognition model supports 99 languages, including English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Arabic, Hindi, Russian and Turkish. Accuracy is best for widely spoken languages.

Can it translate subtitles?

It can translate speech into English subtitles: choose “Translate speech to English” before generating. Translation into other languages is not available yet.

How accurate are the subtitles?

For clear speech accuracy is high, but AI always makes some mistakes with names, accents, jargon and noise. Use the built-in editor and review before publishing.

Why does the first run take longer?

The first time you use a quality mode, your browser downloads that AI model (roughly 40 to 250 MB). It is then stored in your browser, so later runs skip the download. The optional Best quality mode, shown only on desktop browsers that support it, is about 570 MB.

How long does it take?

It depends on your device and the quality you choose. Fast mode on a modern laptop is often quicker than real time. High accuracy is slower, especially on phones and older computers.

Which file types can I use?

Common video and audio files such as MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV, MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG and FLAC. If a file fails, convert it to MP4 or MP3 and try again.

Which subtitle formats can I download?

SRT, WebVTT (VTT), plain text, and text with time codes. SRT and VTT are accepted by YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook, LinkedIn and most video editors.

Can I burn subtitles into the video?

Not in the generator itself. Download the SRT or VTT and add it with your video editor or a media player, or upload it to a platform that supports captions. Our guides show how.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes, on a recent phone browser. Phones have less memory and are slower, so prefer Fast or Balanced quality and shorter files.

Is there a limit on file length?

We set no limit on length. The practical limit is your device’s memory and patience: very long files may need more time or may need to be split.

What is the difference between Fast, Balanced, High accuracy and Best quality?

They are four sizes of speech-recognition model. Fast (~40 MB) is quickest, Balanced (~80 MB) suits most videos, High accuracy (~250 MB) is slower but handles accents, noise and technical words better, and Best quality (~570 MB) is the most accurate. Best quality runs on your graphics card, so it only appears on desktop browsers that support WebGPU; phones and tablets offer Fast and Balanced. You can switch any time.

Does it work offline?

Not completely. The first run needs the internet to download the AI model, and the page and engine code also load from the web. After the first run the model is stored in your browser, but we do not promise offline use.

Can I change the start and end times of subtitles?

You can edit the text, delete lines and click any time code to jump to that moment. Fine-tuning exact start and end times is not available in the editor yet; use your video editor or a subtitle editor for that.

What happens with music or several speakers?

The tool writes down speech and ignores most background music, but loud music can cause errors. It does not label who is speaking, so add speaker names yourself while you review.

Which browsers are supported?

Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on computers, and recent Android and iPhone browsers. Older browsers that lack WebAssembly or modern audio support cannot run the AI.

Can I use the subtitles commercially? Do I need to give credit?

Yes. The subtitles you create are yours, and no credit or attribution is required. Please make sure you have the rights to the video itself.
